Start with the work you want to do
An advisor title does not describe a single license. Selling securities, providing investment advice, and selling insurance can involve different registrations and state requirements. Write down the services you expect to provide and ask the hiring firm’s registration team which approvals apply.
Know where sponsorship matters
FINRA’s SIE is open to eligible individuals without firm sponsorship. Passing it alone does not authorize securities business. The Series 7 requires association with and sponsorship by a FINRA or other applicable SRO member firm, and the SIE is a corequisite. Adviser exams such as Series 65 and Series 66 follow a different path; NASAA and the relevant state regulator explain the requirements.
Build a sequence, not just a study plan
Map the intended role, required exams, sponsoring firm if needed, registration application, background disclosures, and continuing education. Ask who pays for study materials and retakes, how much study time is protected, and when client-facing activity may begin. A CFP designation is separate from securities registration.
